Nigerian-American shot put sensation Jessica Oji has expressed her delight after making history for Nigeria at the World U20 Athletics Championships in Oregon, where she became the country’s first-ever field event gold medallist at the competition.
Oji delivered a standout performance in the women’s shot put to secure the gold medal, adding another major milestone to a remarkable breakthrough season that has already seen her establish herself as one of the world’s leading young throwers.
The 19-year-old entered the championships carrying impressive credentials, including an African U20 record of 18.50 metres set earlier in 2026. World Athletics lists the mark as both the Nigerian and African U20 record.
Reflecting on her triumph, Oji said she was particularly pleased with the result despite arriving at the championships with some physical concerns.
“I’m really happy with the gold medal. I had some physical concerns coming into the competition, so to be able to perform at this level means a lot to me,” Oji said.
The young thrower revealed that her opening attempt gave her confidence that she could challenge for the title, eventually exceeding the expectations she had set for herself before the competition.
“My first throw was enough to win the competition, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting everything to come together that way. I’m just grateful that I was able to get the job done,” she added.
Oji dedicated the historic achievement to her parents and family, crediting them for their unwavering support throughout her rapidly developing career.
The victory represents another landmark moment in a season in which Oji has repeatedly broken records. She has already won the Ivy League title and finished fourth at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a throw of 17.98m, while continuing to compete at the highest collegiate level for the University of Pennsylvania.
Her decision to represent Nigeria internationally has also added another significant dimension to her breakthrough year. World Athletics confirmed her eligibility to represent Nigeria from February 3, 2026, following her switch of sporting allegiance.
With a World U20 title now added to her growing list of achievements, Oji has further strengthened her reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest young athletics prospects and a potential major force in the women’s shot put for years to come.
