‘I Thought It Would Never Come!’ Akinsanmiro Opens Up on Shock AFCON Call-Up

New Super Eagles invitee Ebenezer Akinsanmiro has admitted he was genuinely surprised to receive a call-up to Nigeria’s squad ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, describing the moment as emotional and long-awaited.

Speaking after joining the national team camp, the midfielder revealed that while he had always dreamed of representing Nigeria at a major tournament, he did not expect the AFCON invitation to arrive when it did.

“Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a long time,” Akinsanmiro said.

The youngster recalled that his previous call-up during the World Cup qualifiers ended in disappointment after he suffered an injury that ruled him out of action.

“I was invited during the World Cup qualifiers, but I got injured and couldn’t make it. That was painful for me,” he explained.

Akinsanmiro admitted that the setback left him doubting whether another opportunity would come, especially given the competition for places in the Super Eagles midfield.

“There were moments I felt maybe the chance had passed me by. I even thought I might never get the call again,” he said.

However, the AFCON invitation has renewed his belief and motivation, with the player describing it as a reward for patience and hard work.

“This call-up means everything to me. It shows that hard work and consistency eventually pay off,” he added.

The midfielder said he was overwhelmed by the support he received from family, friends and teammates after the news broke.

“Everyone around me was happy. They know how much this means to me,” he noted.

Akinsanmiro stressed that he is focused on learning from the senior players in the squad and making the most of the opportunity, whether or not he gets playing time.

“I just want to learn, improve, and contribute in any way I can. Being here is already a big honour,” he said.

He also acknowledged the responsibility that comes with wearing the Nigerian jersey, especially at a major tournament like AFCON.

“Representing Nigeria at AFCON is a huge responsibility. I’m ready to give my best,” Akinsanmiro concluded.

As the Super Eagles continue preparations for Morocco, Akinsanmiro’s story reflects the patience, persistence and belief required to reach the highest level of international football.
