“I Had to Step Up for My Country” – Captain Daniel Bameyi Speaks After Heroic Late Penalty Saves Nigeria U20

When the referee’s whistle pierced the evening air in Talca, Chile, signaling a penalty for Nigeria, Daniel Bameyi didn’t hesitate. The U20 national team captain simply picked up the ball, walked to the spot, and shut out the noise.

Moments later, he buried it — calm, precise, unstoppable.

That 86th-minute penalty secured a 1–1 draw for the Flying Eagles against Colombia in their final U20 World Cup group-stage match, a result that kept Nigeria’s campaign alive and booked their place in the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.

After the match, Bameyi — the picture of composure in both play and leadership — opened up about that defining moment.

“When the referee blew for the penalty, I told myself, this is my responsibility as captain,” Bameyi said with quiet confidence.
“I had to step up for my country. We came here to fight for Nigeria, and I knew missing wasn’t an option.”

It was the kind of statement that defines a captain — and the performance matched the words. The 19-year-old defender not only scored under immense pressure but also anchored Nigeria’s defence with authority, earning an 8.2 performance rating for his all-round display.

Even when Colombia struck first through Kener González early in the second half, Bameyi never stopped urging his teammates forward. His leadership, both vocal and by example, became the heartbeat of the team’s response.

“We believed till the end,” he said. “Colombia are a strong side, but we trusted our process, stayed compact, and kept pushing. That’s what Nigerian football is about — fight, unity, and pride.”

Despite finishing third in their group, Nigeria’s relentless mentality has kept their World Cup dream alive — and now, the Flying Eagles turn their focus to a monumental Round of 16 clash with Argentina on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

Bameyi, though proud of his goal, is already thinking ahead.

“This goal means a lot, but qualification means even more,” he said. “I’m proud of the boys, and we’ll keep giving everything for Nigeria. We’re not done yet.”

From the calmness in front of goal to the steel in defence, Daniel Bameyi embodies the new generation of Nigerian football — bold, disciplined, and unafraid of the big stage.

On the night when the Flying Eagles needed a hero, their captain rose to the occasion.
And in his own words, he did it the only way he knows how —
“for my country.”
