CAF Ranking and Qualification Explained
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) applies a rolling five-year ranking system to determine how many clubs each member association can enter into continental competitions.
Under this framework, the top 12 ranked associations are entitled to two representatives each in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
Nigeria Holds On to a Top-12 Spot
Although Rivers United endured a torrid Champions League campaign in 2025/2026, Nigeria accumulated enough ranking points across the assessment period to finish 12th overall in the latest CAF five-year rankings.
That position—right on the cut-off—keeps Nigeria within the top-12 bracket. The country’s total of 19 points places it ahead of Libya (13th, 15 points) but behind Ivory Coast (11th).
Crucially, Rivers United’s struggles were not enough to push Nigeria out of the qualification zone.
What This Means for Nigerian Clubs
By retaining a top-12 ranking, Nigeria will continue to field two clubs in the CAF Champions League and two in the CAF Confederation Cup—four representatives in total—for the 2026/2027 season.
This continuity offers a measure of relief to stakeholders, particularly amid concerns that repeated early exits could eventually erode the country’s continental quota.
A Warning for the Future
While Nigeria has avoided immediate consequences, the narrow margin underscores a growing concern.
Sustained underperformance by Nigerian clubs could see the country slip below the top 12 in future rankings, reducing its representation to just one club per competition.
For now, Nigeria survives the cut—but the message is unmistakable: stronger continental performances are essential to safeguard and enhance the nation’s CAF standing.
