History Of Badminton In Nigeria

Badminton was originally named “Poona”. The name came from a town in India where British .army officers first saw the natives playing with bat and a kind of shuttle.

The game was first played in England in about 1878 when it was launched at a place called Badminton in England.

Badminton is essentially an indoor game. Canadian Badminton Association formed in 1921 was the first to be formed.

The game was introduced to Nigeria around 1930 by the colonial administrators, Nigeria took part in the game at the international level at the 2nd A” African games held in Lagos in 1973.

The Badminton Federation of Nigeria was formed in 1975 with Mr. La/eye as the first Chairman.
