High-Flying Southampton FC Baptize Arthur Okonkwo With Five Goals Hours After FIFA Confirms Nigeria Switch

Southampton FC delivered a ruthless attacking display to thrash Wrexham AFC 5-1 in a crucial Championship clash, compounding a difficult day for goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo just hours after confirmation of his international switch to Nigeria by FIFA.

The Saints wasted no time asserting dominance at the STōK Cae Ras, racing into a two-goal lead inside 22 minutes through Kuryu Matsuki and Flynn Downes.

Their early intensity left Wrexham chasing shadows, with Okonkwo beaten twice before the hosts could settle.

Josh Windass briefly offered hope for Wrexham with a composed finish in the 34th minute, but the visitors regained full control after the break. Cyle Larin capitalised on a defensive lapse to restore Southampton’s cushion just past the hour mark.

Late goals from Ross Stewart and Finn Azaz completed the rout, sealing a fifth straight league victory and extending Southampton’s unbeaten run.

For Okonkwo, the heavy defeat marked a harsh contrast to a milestone moment off the pitch.

The former England youth international had earlier received clearance from FIFA to represent Nigeria at senior level, a decision that had been widely celebrated among Super Eagles supporters.

However, the 23-year-old endured a difficult evening in goal, beaten five times as Southampton’s clinical finishing exposed Wrexham’s defensive frailties.

The emphatic result sees Southampton climb into the Championship play-off places, leapfrogging Wrexham into sixth, with momentum firmly on their side as the promotion race intensifies.
