Shorunmu revealed that the passing of the respected coach came as a painful shock, especially as he had attempted to reach him shortly before the news of his death broke.
“I tried reaching him during his 88th birthday celebration, but unfortunately the news came not long after,” Shorunmu said.
The former goalkeeper explained that Onigbinde was more than just a coach to many players who passed through the Nigeria national football team, stressing that his leadership style helped shape the careers and character of several footballers.
“He was a father figure to many of us and someone who always emphasized discipline and professionalism,” he added.
Onigbinde, who famously led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup, was widely respected for his strict but fair approach to coaching and his willingness to give opportunities to young players.
According to Shorunmu, the late coach’s leadership went beyond football tactics, as he constantly encouraged players to maintain strong moral values both on and off the pitch.
“He lived a very good life and contributed immensely to Nigerian football,” Shorunmu noted.
The former Super Eagles goalkeeper also extended his condolences to the family of the late coach, thanking God for the impactful life he lived and the legacy he left behind.
“We thank God for his life and everything he did for the game,” he said.
Tributes have continued to pour in from former players, administrators and fans across Nigeria as the football community remembers Onigbinde as a disciplinarian, mentor and one of the country’s most respected coaches.
