‘He Gave Me My World Cup Dream!’ Efetobore Sodje Pays Emotional Tribute to Late Coach Onigbinde

Former Super Eagles defender Efetobore Sodje has expressed deep sadness over the death of former Nigeria head coach Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, describing him as a man who played a crucial role in his international football career.

Sodje recalled that the late tactician gave him the opportunity to represent Nigeria national football team at the biggest stage of world football during the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on the passing of the veteran coach, the former defender said he will always remain grateful for the faith Onigbinde showed in him at a crucial point in his career.

“He gave me the rare opportunity not only to play for Nigeria but also to feature at the World Cup in 2002,” Sodje said.

The ex-right back, widely recognized for his trademark do-rag during his playing days, described the late coach as a leader who believed in his players and trusted them to perform on the international stage.

Sodje noted that their relationship extended beyond football even after his playing career ended.

“Even after I stopped playing, we still maintained a good relationship,” he added.

He explained that Onigbinde’s mentorship and guidance left a lasting impression on many players who passed through the national team during his tenure.

The former defender also paid tribute to the late football icon’s legacy, stressing that his contributions to Nigerian football will not be forgotten.

Onigbinde, who held the traditional title of High Chief of Modakeke, was widely respected both within the football community and in society.

Sodje said the veteran coach’s influence went beyond tactics and results, highlighting his discipline and leadership qualities.

“He will be greatly missed,” Sodje concluded.
