Former Nigeria international Chikelue Illeonyonsi has thrown his full support behind Maduka Okoye’s decision to withdraw from the Super Eagles’ AFCON squad, insisting the goalkeeper was right to step aside after receiving no assurance of a starting role ahead of the tournament in Morocco.
Okoye’s withdrawal sparked debate among fans and pundits, but Illeonyonsi believes the decision was practical and professional, not controversial.
“If you are not going to play, then there is no reason to honour the invitation. Okoye did the right thing,” Illeonyonsi said.
The former international explained that national team call-ups should come with clarity, especially in a high-stakes tournament like the Africa Cup of Nations.
“AFCON is not a place to sit on the bench and make up numbers. Players want to compete, not just travel,” he added.
Illeonyonsi argued that goalkeepers, in particular, face a unique situation, as only one can play throughout the tournament, making honesty from the technical crew crucial.
“For goalkeepers, it’s different. If you are not first choice, you need to know early. It helps everyone plan properly,” he stated.
He dismissed suggestions that Okoye’s decision showed a lack of commitment to the national team, stressing that professionalism also means protecting one’s career and form at club level.
“This has nothing to do with patriotism. It’s about being realistic. If he’s not going to play, he shouldn’t be blamed for stepping aside,” Illeonyonsi said.
The former defender also noted that Nigeria currently has several goalkeepers capable of stepping up, meaning Okoye’s absence should not destabilize the team.
“We have options. The team will move on, and whoever is selected must be ready to perform,” he added.
Illeonyonsi concluded by urging fans to respect players’ decisions and focus on supporting those who will represent Nigeria in Morocco.
“The most important thing now is unity. AFCON is around the corner, and the players going must have full support,” he said.
As the Super Eagles finalize preparations, the debate around Okoye’s exit continues—but Illeonyonsi’s stance is clear: clarity matters, and the goalkeeper made a sensible call.
