Speaking on the matter, Rohr disclosed that he and his assistant at the time, Tunde Adelakun, approached Olise between 2019 and 2020 when the player was still developing at Reading FC.

“We tried to convince him,” Rohr said.

According to the former coach, Olise made his intentions clear from the outset, showing strong conviction about his future at international level.

“He already knew what he wanted,” he implied.

Rohr explained that the young winger believed he was destined to represent one of Europe’s top footballing nations, and that belief ultimately shaped his decision.

“He had a clear vision,” he noted.

At the time, Olise was still emerging, but his potential was evident, prompting Nigeria to act early in trying to secure his commitment.

“We saw his talent early,” Rohr added.

Despite Nigeria’s efforts, the player’s decision remained unchanged, highlighting the challenges faced by African nations in attracting dual-nationality players.

“It was his choice,” Rohr stressed.

The revelation sheds light on the complexities of international eligibility and player allegiance, particularly in modern football where options are increasingly diverse.

For Nigeria, the focus remains on building a squad committed to the national cause.

For Rohr, the message is simple.

You can try to convince.

But in the end, the player decides.

And in Olise’s case, his path was clear from the beginning.
