Sir Cornelius Okonkwo, head coach of IBB Football FC, has reaffirmed his belief in grassroots football as the foundation of Nigeria’s football future. Speaking on the club’s legacy, Okonkwo stated, “Grassroots is where the future begins.
If we don’t build from here, we have no business dreaming of World Cups.”

IBB FC, founded in 1986, is the oldest grassroots football club in Nkpor, Anambra State. For nearly 40 years, the club has developed hundreds of young players under the leadership of Sir Okonkwo, with many advancing to professional careers in Europe and beyond.
Known for his tactical awareness, vision, and game-reading abilities, Okonkwo has remained a pillar of youth football in Southeast Nigeria. His longevity in coaching and dedication to nurturing young talent have earned him immense respect in the football community.
“We’ve never had the biggest budgets,” he said, “but what we have is vision, discipline, and the heart to raise players who can shine anywhere.”
Sir Cornelius began coaching in the early 1980s and was instrumental in shaping the early structure of youth football in Anambra State. Under his guidance, IBB FC became a launchpad for raw talent, often scouting players from local schools, streets, and small competitions.
He emphasized the importance of consistency: “Even before many of today’s players were born, I was on the training pitch. This isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.”
As Nigerian football continues to call for deeper grassroots reform, voices like Sir Okonkwo’s offer both inspiration and a working model. With decades of experience and results to show, he remains focused on producing the next generation of stars, one training session at a time.
“Every time a player signs a contract abroad or gets a national team call-up, it’s a win for all of us in grassroots,” he said. “And we’re not stopping.”
IBB FC continues to train young players weekly at its base in Nkpor, with Sir Cornelius Okonkwo leading the way—just as he has for almost 40 years.
