Washington Spirit head coach Adrian Gonzalez has applauded the growing partnership between Nigerian forward Gift Monday and Ivorian striker Rosemonde Kouassi, after the pair combined brilliantly in the team’s 2–0 win over Portland Thorns.
Gonzalez, speaking after the match, said the connection between the African duo is “special, instinctive, and extremely dangerous for any defence,” noting that their understanding—both on and off the ball—played a huge role in securing the victory.

Gift Monday delivered the assist for Kouassi’s opener, a move Gonzalez described as “a perfect example of chemistry that cannot be coached.”
He explained that while the Spirit technical staff has been deliberately working to “provoke and enhance” the partnership during training, much of what is happening on the pitch comes naturally from the bond the players have built away from football.
“You can teach movement, you can teach patterns, but true chemistry is something players either have or they don’t,” Gonzalez said. “Gift and Rosemonde have it — and it’s growing every game.”
He also praised the professionalism of both players, highlighting how their communication, work rate, and shared attacking instincts elevate the entire team’s offensive play.
Gonzalez added that Gift Monday’s confidence is rising rapidly, and Kouassi is benefiting from her dynamism and creativity on the wings. He believes this partnership could become one of the most productive attacking duos in the league if they continue developing at this pace.
He concluded by encouraging both forwards to stay focused, maintain humility, and keep building the connection that is becoming one of Washington Spirit’s biggest strengths this season
