Golden Eaglets Must Fix Defensive Errors Against Côte d’Ivoire to Keep AFCON Hopes Alive

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets must deliver a more disciplined defensive performance when they face Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday if they are to keep their 2026 WAFU B U-17 Championship campaign alive.

The match, scheduled for October 17 at 5 p.m. West African Time at Stade du 4-Août in Ouagadougou, has become a crucial test for head coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere following Nigeria’s 2–1 opening defeat to Niger.

The Golden Eaglets struggled to prevent Niger from making the most of their opportunities. Abdoul Razaq Zada opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Abdoul Rakilou doubled Niger’s advantage in the 86th minute. Mubarak Fasiu pulled one back in added time, but Nigeria could not find an equaliser.

The result leaves Nigeria under pressure ahead of their final group fixture.
Against Côte d’Ivoire, the Eaglets will need to combine defensive concentration with greater attacking efficiency. Conceding first could make an already difficult task more complicated, particularly against an opponent that remains in contention for a semi-final place.
Nigeria must also ensure that their attacking efforts do not leave unnecessary spaces for the Ivorians to exploit. Finding the right balance between pressing for goals and maintaining defensive organisation could prove decisive.
However, the challenge extends beyond the backline. The Eaglets must make their possession count, create clear chances and show greater composure in front of goal.
Fasiu’s late strike against Niger demonstrated that Nigeria could still find a way through, but leaving their response until the closing stages would be a dangerous approach in a match carrying such importance.
Côte d’Ivoire drew 1–1 with Niger in their opening game, leaving both the Ivorians and Nigeria competing for the remaining semi-final place in Group B.

For Uwejamomere and his players, Saturday offers an opportunity to respond to their opening setback.

The Golden Eaglets need more than a strong finish this time. They need a complete performance from the opening whistle to the final whistle.
