Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets wrapped up their 2025 WAFU-B U17 Cup campaign on a high note after defeating Burkina Faso 2-0 in the third-place playoff, securing bronze and salvaging pride despite missing out on qualification for the Africa U17 Cup of Nations.
The Eaglets, who were knocked out in the semi-finals by Ghana’s Black Starlets, responded in style with a confident display at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium. Goals in either half underlined their dominance, as Nigeria showed greater sharpness in attack and discipline at the back to keep a clean sheet.

The win was a testament to the team’s character, bouncing back from the disappointment of their semi-final loss. It also highlighted the depth of talent in the squad, with players stepping up when it mattered to ensure the Golden Eaglets did not leave the tournament empty-handed.
Coach Manu Garba praised his boys for their fighting spirit, insisting the bronze medal reflects both the promise of the team and lessons learned from the campaign. “We wanted to finish strong and the players showed the right mentality. This result is good for their confidence as they continue to grow,” he said.
While Nigeria’s dream of qualifying for the U17 AFCON ended in the last four, the bronze medal victory provides a positive ending to their WAFU-B journey. For many of the youngsters, the experience in Côte d’Ivoire will serve as an important foundation for future national team call-ups.
The Golden Eaglets may not have booked their ticket to the continent’s biggest U17 showpiece, but they leave the competition with pride intact and a reminder that Nigeria’s conveyor belt of youth talent remains strong.
