Godwin Okpara Urges Victor Boniface To ‘Self-Reflect’ After Werder Bremen Boss Questions His Consistency

Former Super Eagles defender Godwin Okpara has advised Victor Boniface to conduct a “personal evaluation” of his recent performances following remarks made by Werder Bremen’s head coach, Horst Steffen.

Steffen, who has twice commented publicly on Boniface’s form, recently said the Nigerian striker “can still do much better,” despite scoring and assisting regularly for the Bundesliga club this season. The coach’s latest remarks came after their 2-2 draw last weekend, where Boniface was substituted in the second half.

Okpara, speaking to Nigerian media, said while Steffen’s criticism might appear harsh, it should serve as a motivation rather than a deterrent. “In football, a coach pushing you means he believes in you,” Okpara said.

“Boniface has been fantastic since joining the German league, but there’s always room to improve. He needs to look within and ask himself what small things he can refine — movement, finishing, or decision-making.”

The former PSG and Super Eagles centre-back added that strikers often go through phases where confidence, fatigue, or external pressure can affect performance, stressing the importance of mental strength.

“At this level, the difference between a good season and a great one is psychological. Boniface is still young, and these moments will shape his career. He just has to stay focused, keep learning, and block out the noise,” Okpara explained.

He also pointed out that consistency will be key ahead of Nigeria’s World Cup playoff in November, where Boniface is expected to play a vital role. “This is not the time to lose form,” Okpara warned. “The World Cup playoff is around the corner, and Nigeria will need players like him sharp and confident.”

Boniface has scored six goals and provided three assists this season, but Steffen’s comments have sparked debate among fans over whether the striker is being over-criticised.
