Goalkeeper Akuchie Obinna has completed a move to Abakaliki FC, the Ebonyi State-based side competing in the Nigeria National League (NNL), after his proposed switch to Rivers United fell through during pre-season.
The experienced shot-stopper was instrumental in helping Owerri-based Kun Khalifat gain promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), delivering a string of impressive performances that caught the attention of several top-flight clubs.

His form earned him a pre-season invitation to join Rivers United in Ikenne Remo, Ogun State, where he trained and featured in warm-up matches with the Port Harcourt club. However, despite promising early signs, the move ultimately broke down and Obinna was not registered for the NPFL campaign.
Undeterred, the goalkeeper has now set his sights on a new challenge with Abakaliki FC. Club officials believe his arrival will bring valuable experience, composure and leadership to the squad as they prepare for the new NNL season.
Speaking about his next chapter, Obinna expressed optimism about the future, saying he remains fully focused on what lies ahead rather than past setbacks.
“Don’t think about what has happened; focus on tomorrow,” he said. “Tomorrow has something special for you. Tomorrow will be better.”
Known for his sharp reflexes, strong command of the box and calm presence between the posts, Obinna is expected to play a central role for the “Rice Boyz” as they aim to make a strong statement in the new campaign.
For Akuchie Obinna, the move represents more than just a change of club — it’s a chance at redemption and a fresh opportunity to remind Nigerian football of his quality and determination.
