Nigeria’s sprint queen Tobi Amusan has sent a powerful warning to her rivals after producing the fastest women’s 100m hurdles performance ever recorded at the Commonwealth Games under any conditions, cruising into tonight’s final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The reigning world record holder stormed to victory in Heat One in a blistering 12.19 seconds, finishing well clear of South Africa’s Marione Fourie (12.50s) and Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill (12.69s) to secure automatic qualification for the final.
Although the time will not be recognised as a Commonwealth Games record because it was aided by an illegal +3.8m/s tailwind, it is nevertheless the fastest time ever run in the history of the Commonwealth Games under any wind conditions, underlining the exceptional form of the Nigerian superstar.
Amusan looked completely untroubled from the gun, attacking every hurdle with precision before easing through the finish line with plenty left in reserve.
The performance is the clearest indication yet that the 28-year-old is primed for another golden moment.
Tonight, all eyes will be on Scotstoun Stadium as Amusan bids to win an unprecedented third consecutive Commonwealth Games women’s 100m hurdles title, having already conquered the event at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.
Already regarded as Nigeria’s greatest female hurdler, Amusan etched her name into history in 2022 when she became Nigeria’s first World Athletics champion and set the still-standing world record of 12.12 seconds in Eugene, Oregon. Since then, she has continued to dominate the event, collecting Diamond League titles, African crowns and establishing herself among the greatest sprint hurdlers of her generation.
Her commanding display in Glasgow comes after another impressive season on the Diamond League circuit, where she consistently ran among the world’s fastest times heading into the Commonwealth Games.
Amusan’s qualification also boosts Team Nigeria’s growing medal ambitions. Nigeria has already collected 14 medals—7 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze—and the country’s biggest athletics star now has the opportunity to add another gold to that tally.
The final takes place later tonight, where Amusan will line up not just as the defending champion, but as the overwhelming favourite to once again stand atop the Commonwealth podium.
