With 15 days to go before the 14th African Armwrestling Championship kicks off in Abuja, Nigeria (July 23–27, 2025), the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) is calling for urgent financial support to enable its national team — the Golden Arms — to defend their title on African soil.
GAF President Mr. Charles Osei Asibey disclosed that the team requires $42,000 to fund essential needs including transportation, accommodation, feeding, equipment, and competition fees.

Without this support, Ghana’s celebrated armwrestling squad — which has won over 350 international medals — could miss out on the biggest continental armwrestling stage.
“The Golden Arms are one of the most consistent teams in Africa, but right now, they’re in danger of not showing up,” said Mr. Asibey. “We’re appealing to corporate Ghana, government institutions, and passionate supporters to help us make their participation possible.”
Ghana plans to send a 24-person contingent (20 athletes and 4 officials) to the event, which is expected to host over 400 armwrestlers from more than 20 African countries, competing at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The Golden Arms have been in camp training rigorously since February and are hopeful of assistance from the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (MoSR). But as the clock ticks, the federation has launched a broader public appeal.
This year’s African Armwrestling Championship, hosted by Nigeria for the second time, is set to be the biggest yet — and Ghana, as defending champions, is seen as a key attraction.
“We’re ready. The athletes are fired up. All we need now is the support to get to Abuja,” Asibey emphasized.
Unless funding arrives swiftly, Ghana risks watching the tournament from the sidelines — a devastating blow for a team that has brought pride to the nation time and again.
Will Ghana rise to support its champions? The race to raise $42,000 is on.
