Gavin Bazunu Happy To Join Stoke City’s Hunt For ‘Something Big’

Republic of Ireland’s Nigerian-born goalkeeper, Gavin Okeroghene Bazunu is excited with his move to Stoke City, as he will now join the club in their hunt for ‘something big’ this season in the Championship.

Sports247 reports that Bazunu, who was initially touted for an international career with the Super Eagles before he opted for the country of his birth, moved to Stoke from Southampton at the start of this week.

The lanky lad leaves behind Joe Aribo at The Saints and is already looking for a new lease of life with Stoke, who previously had Shola Ameobi, Peter Osaze Odemwingie, Peter Oghenekaro Etebo, Seyi George Olofinjana, Victor Moses and John Mikel Obi in their squad.

Although Bazunu is only on loan at The Potters for the rest of this season, the 23-year-old shot-stopper said he will make the best use of the opportunity, which came after the second-tier club’s first-choice, Viktor Johansson went for surgery.

Bazunu, who has 22 caps for Ireland, played 96 games for Southampton – following his £12m arrival from Manchester City in 2022 – and helped The Saints win promotion to the English Premier League two seasons ago.

He had earlier been loaned to Standard Liege of Belgium for the second half of last season and already played 19 times for Southampton in the Championship this term, but they recently got Israel’s Daniel Peretz on loan from Bayern Munich.

Bazunu is now seeking fresh relevance and enthused, “With the squad fighting for something big, it’s an exciting time for me to join.

“We’re in a great position and, if we can put a run of results together, I believe we can make ourselves challengers, come the end of the season.”
