After 11 electrifying days of sporting excellence, Ogun State will tonight draw the curtain on what has been described as one of the best-organized editions of the National Sports Festival in history.
As the closing ceremony gets underway at the majestic MKO Abiola Sports Arena, the eyes of the nation — still dazzled by the festival’s thrilling highs — turn to Abeokuta for one final spectacle.

The Gateway Games 2024 were not just a celebration of athleticism, but a national showcase of unity, promise, and passion.
From sprinting stars to football heroes, and surprise medalists to historic records, the festival brought together the best of Nigeria’s present and future.
With over 10 venues across the state buzzing with life, including the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Obafemi Awolowo Square in Ikenne, and even the NYSC orientation camp in Shagamu, Ogun State transformed into a sports-loving powerhouse, earning its newfound reputation as the “Heart of Nigerian Sports.”
Nothing symbolized this better than the epic football final where the host state, Ogun, triumphed 4-1 over Kwara in front of a roaring capacity crowd — and a stadium overflow so large that thousands watched from outside on giant screens.
It wasn’t just a match; it was a moment of collective national pride.
“This festival was more than competition — it was about belief,” said Mallam Shehu Dilko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave us unwavering support, and Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment turned vision into reality. Nigeria owes them a debt of gratitude.”
And the praise didn’t end there. Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC and head of the Main Organising Committee, lauded the hundreds of behind-the-scenes heroes.
“This was a people-powered triumph,” he said. “From volunteers to officials, media to athletes — everyone delivered.”
One of the festival’s biggest surprises came from the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA), a newly established 38th team that defied the odds by claiming medals and turning heads. Their emergence as podium contenders underscored the festival’s deeper goal: nurturing the future of Nigerian sports.
Even with some organizational hiccups, the NSC assured Nigerians that lessons have been learned and improvements are already underway for the next festival — to be hosted by Enugu State in 2026.
Tonight’s closing ceremony promises another emotional, culture-rich celebration, with dignitaries, captains of industry, and artists converging to celebrate what many now consider a gold standard for future editions.
As Ogun hands over the hosting baton to Enugu, one truth is undeniable: the 2024 Gateway Games have redefined what’s possible in Nigerian sports — uniting a country, inspiring its youth, and proving that with the right will, the future is not just bright — it’s blazing.
