Garba Lawal Laments Misconduct Cases, Warns Young Players Abroad

Former Super Eagles winger Garba Lawal has expressed deep concern over the conduct of some young Nigerian footballers abroad following reports that Daniel Daga was sentenced to six months in prison in Norway over a sexual assault case.

Reacting to the development, Lawal said the incident is unfortunate and could have lasting consequences for the young player’s career and reputation.

“I read that Daniel Daga was sentenced to six months in prison or something like that. If they put you in for one day or for some hours, it dents your integrity,” Lawal said.

The former international warned that such situations could make it difficult for players to secure opportunities in Europe in the future.

“Now, if you come out, for example, which club in Europe would want to sign him? The same thing goes for back home here in Nigeria; they will see you as someone who doesn’t have anything on their mind. It’s so unfortunate. I saw it this morning; I weep for the young upcoming generation of players.”

Lawal also reminded players that they must respect the laws of the countries where they play.

“You went to their country where they uphold the law. Anything that the girl says, they will believe her because you are in a foreigner’s position,” he said.

The former winger further urged young footballers to be cautious in their personal lives while pursuing careers abroad.

“As a young player, you need to be very cautious. If it’s because of women, then why do you travel to Europe? Stay in Nigeria; we have beautiful women here,” he added.

Lawal concluded by noting that while there might still be legal efforts to reduce the punishment, the reputational damage could already be significant.

“Maybe the club can fight for him; maybe they can reduce the ban, but already his integrity is spoiled. You cannot take it back,” he said.
