Former Super Eagles star Garba Lawal has advised that the Nigeria Football Federation and national team head coach Eric Chelle should consider going their separate ways if they cannot reach common ground over the coach’s future.
Lawal, popularly known as “Chindo,” said while he has not personally heard the details of Chelle’s alleged demands, both sides must prioritise professionalism and respect for existing agreements.

“If they cannot agree, then it is better they part ways peacefully,” Lawal said.
The former winger pointed out that reaching the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations is not an extraordinary achievement for Nigeria, noting that the Super Eagles have historically been among the continent’s strongest teams.
“Getting to the semi-final of AFCON is nothing new for Nigeria,” he explained.
Lawal also stressed that contract negotiations usually happen at the beginning of a project or after winning major trophies rather than midway through an agreement.
“Demands are usually made when a project starts or when a team wins something big, not halfway through a contract,” he added.
According to him, respecting contractual terms is important for maintaining stability in Nigerian football.
“Every coach must respect the terms they signed,” he said.
However, Lawal acknowledged that discussions between the coach and the federation remain necessary to avoid unnecessary tension.
“Dialogue is always important, but it must be done properly,” he noted.
He concluded by urging all parties to act in the best interest of the national team.
“The most important thing is the progress of the Super Eagles,” Lawal stated.
As speculation continues over Chelle’s future, Lawal’s comments highlight the importance of clarity and mutual understanding in the relationship between the coach and the federation.
