Kun Khalifat Football Club have announced their immediate withdrawal from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), citing deep frustration over what they described as unfair and disproportionate sanctions imposed by the league organisers.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the club owner confirmed that Kun Khalifat FC would no longer participate in the ongoing NPFL season after completing 24 matches.
The decision follows disciplinary measures handed down by the NPFL for the club’s failure to honour a single league fixture.
The NPFL sanctioned Kun Khalifat FC with the forfeiture of three points and three goals, which were awarded to their opponents, alongside a fine of ₦10 million.
According to the club, the punishment was excessive and failed to take into account the circumstances surrounding their inability to honour the fixture.
Kun Khalifat FC stated that valid reasons were submitted to the league, but these explanations were rejected. The club accused the NPFL of bias and a lack of transparency, arguing that the league’s management prioritises punishment and revenue generation over fairness, development and the welfare of its member clubs.
“As a club, we have consistently strived to comply with the league’s rules and regulations and have made significant investments in our team and infrastructure,” the statement read.
“It is disheartening to see these efforts undermined by an organisation that appears to prioritise punishment over justice.”
The club further claimed that the NPFL’s actions left them with no option but to withdraw, insisting they could no longer be part of a system they believe disregards the challenges faced by clubs across the country.
Kun Khalifat FC also called on other NPFL clubs to demand reforms and greater accountability from the league’s leadership, stressing that Nigerian football must move forward in an environment that encourages growth rather than stifling it.
Despite their withdrawal, the club thanked their fans, players and stakeholders for their unwavering support and hinted at exploring alternative platforms to showcase their talents and continue contributing to Nigerian football.
“We are done with the NPFL,” the statement concluded.
Kun Khalifat FC’s withdrawal adds another layer of controversy to the 2025/2026 NPFL season, with wider implications expected as the league authorities respond to the development.
