From South Africa Etafia Delivers Boost on Nwabali: ‘He’s Back on the Grass — Nigeria’s No.1 Could Be Ready for AFCON’

Former Super Eagles and Moroka Swallows goalkeeper Greg Etafia has delivered a major update on the fitness of Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, offering fresh hope that he may recover in time for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which kicks off on 21 December 2025.

Speaking from South Africa, where Nwabali plays for Chippa United, Etafia revealed that the goalkeeper has returned to light training, both in the gym and on the pitch.

“I’ve been in touch with officials at Chippa United, and they confirmed Stanley has started light work — gym sessions and training on grass. This is very good news for Nigeria,” Etafia said.

The update is a boost for Super Eagles fans, many of whom feared the worst after reports of Nwabali’s injury surfaced. The goalkeeper played a crucial role during the last AFCON, where Nigeria finished runners-up, and has since become one of the most trusted figures in the squad.

Etafia expressed confidence that Nwabali has the mentality and work ethic required to complete his recovery in time.

“Stanley is strong, disciplined, and committed. If the progress continues like this, he has a real chance of being ready for AFCON, and even starting as Nigeria’s number one,” he stated.

The former keeper acknowledged that while Nwabali may not yet be at full intensity, early signs are encouraging.

“Returning to the grass is the biggest step. It shows the injury is healing well. Now it’s about careful progression and monitoring,” he added.

Etafia also praised the medical team at Chippa United for handling the situation professionally and maintaining communication with stakeholders in Nigeria.

“Their updates have been clear. They’re doing a great job managing him and ensuring he doesn’t rush back too quickly,” he said.

With competition for the goalkeeping spot heating up ahead of the final squad announcement, Etafia believes Nwabali’s leadership gives him an edge.

“His presence alone brings confidence. If he’s fit, he starts, no question,” he concluded.

Nigerians will now watch closely as Nwabali’s recovery continues, hoping their AFCON dreams receive a timely boost.
