The University of Abuja has concluded its campaign at the 15th West African University Games (WAUG) with 13 medals, highlighting the contributions of student-athletes competing across different sporting disciplines.
The university secured one gold, six silver and six bronze medals at the competition hosted by Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, from October 2 to 12.
However, beyond the medal tally, the performances revealed how students from different academic departments contributed to the institution’s sporting achievements.
Political Science student Daniel Prince Chukwudi delivered UniAbuja’s only gold medal, emerging victorious in the men’s under-87kg taekwondo category.
His achievement was supported by other competitors who reached the podium in the same sport.
Osu Abubakar, also from Political Science, secured silver in the men’s under-80kg division, while Emmanuel Chigbu Chimeremeze of Agricultural Science finished second in the over-87kg category.
The university also recorded silver-medal performances through Samuel Miracle of Social Science Education and Muhammad Amina of Educational Management.
Physics student Akinsola Abdul Basit contributed bronze in the under-63kg category, while Etietsola Fransisco Inioluwa of Political Science also claimed bronze in the under-74kg division.
UniAbuja’s medal-winning performances extended beyond taekwondo.
In badminton, Business Administration student Angela Haruna secured silver in the women’s singles competition.
She also partnered Samuel Martins to claim bronze in the mixed doubles event, adding another medal to the university’s collection.
The results underline the range of academic backgrounds represented by the university’s athletes.
While university sporting competitions provide opportunities to win medals, they also offer students a platform to develop their abilities alongside their academic responsibilities.
For institutions seeking to strengthen campus sports, such performances demonstrate the value of competitive opportunities across multiple disciplines.
The WAUG competition brought together universities from across West Africa, allowing student-athletes to test themselves against regional opposition.
UniAbuja’s final tally reflects contributions from several sports rather than dependence on a single athlete.
With the competition concluded, the university’s attention can now turn towards building on those performances and supporting its athletes ahead of future championships.
For the medal winners, the achievements provide another milestone in their sporting journeys while they continue pursuing their academic qualifications.
