The event took place on the 8th of July at the indoor sports hall of the national stadium in Surulere.

During an interview with Sports247, Michael was asked about his experience with his opponent, to which he responded, “It was challenging. My opponent is a formidable boxer, and he didn’t make it easy for me to bring out my best. Nevertheless, I had no option but to rise to the occasion. I am grateful for the extensive training I underwent at the camp, including road walks, skipping, and workouts, all while being supported and encouraged by my fellow firefighters. It was hard work, but it paid off.”

When inquired about the preparations he undertook before the competition, Michael emphasized, “My preparation involved dedication and rigorous training. While others slept, I was up, engaged in intense training, including skipping, jogging, and boxing drills. My opponent is a skilled champion, and I have great respect for him. While others were occupied with other pursuits, I was committed to honing my boxing skills.”

Regarding his achievements in the sport, Michael mentioned, “Although I have been boxing for several years, I have yet to win any titles. However, I am determined to work hard and strive for success in my future bouts.”

Michael expressed his aspirations for the future, saying, “I want to make my country, Nigeria, proud and bring glory to Ojo. As a widower’s son, I aim to support my mother financially through my boxing career and also extend assistance to my fellow firefighters. Creating opportunities for them in this field is a priority. However, I recognize that boxing requires significant financial backing, and I am in need of sponsors from any source.”

He revealed that his previous role model was Mayweather, but he now looks up to Devin Haney and Canelo Alvarez, who compete in different weight categories. Michael remarked, “Mayweather is a boxing legend, a deity in the sport, but my current role models are Devin Haney and Canelo Alvarez.”

Offering advice to aspiring young boxers who see him as their inspiration, Michael emphasized the importance of perseverance. He stated, “For those who view me as their role model, I urge them not to relent in their pursuit. Education is crucial, and they should focus on graduating. With determination and divine support, we will find the help and encouragement we need to succeed.”

When asked about his thoughts on the state of sports in Nigeria, particularly boxing, Michael candidly expressed concern. He said, “Sports in Nigeria is dead. Boxers, like myself, endure injuries and hardships during training and competitions. Unfortunately, the support from our government has been inadequate. I implore the President of Nigeria, the Governor of Lagos State, and prominent individuals, including musicians and well-wishers, to invest in supporting sports and athletes. We may not be established celebrities yet, but we are passionate about what we do and aim to bring honour to our country. Support from all quarters will make a significant difference in our journey.”
