Ademola Lookman enjoyed a dream debut for Atlético Madrid, producing a goal and an assist in a commanding Spanish Copa del Rey quarter-final victory over Real Betis at the Estadio de La Cartuja.
The Nigerian forward featured for 79 minutes and was one of the standout performers as Diego Simeone’s side booked their place in the semi-finals in emphatic fashion.
Atlético set the tone early in the contest, taking t4he lead in the 12th minute when Koke delivered a precise cross that was headed home by David Hancko.
The Madrid side continued to dominate proceedings and doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark, as Matteo Ruggeri teed up Giuliano Simeone, who finished confidently with his right foot.
Lookman announced himself in spectacular style seven minutes later. Pablo Barrios slipped a clever pass into the box, and the Super Eagles star showed composure and sharp movement to slot home with his right foot, making it 3–0 and capping an impressive first-half display from the visitors.
The 26-year-old was not done yet. In the 63rd minute, Lookman turned provider, delivering a well-weighted assist for Antoine Griezmann, who swept the ball into the net with his left foot to further extend Atlético’s lead. Lookman was withdrawn to applause in the 79th minute, having made a decisive impact on his first outing in red and white.
Although Thiago Almada pulled one back for Real Betis late on with a fine strike in the 83rd minute, it proved little more than a consolation.
Atlético Madrid comfortably saw out the game, with Lookman’s debut display offering an exciting glimpse of what he can bring as the club targets silverware this season.
