Fresh Option Up Front! Ijeh Welcomes Onuachu’s Recall to Ease Osimhen Burden at AFCON

Former Nigerian international Peter Ijeh has welcomed the recall of Paul Onuachu to the Super Eagles squad ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, describing it as a timely move that could reduce Nigeria’s heavy reliance on Victor Osimhen.

Onuachu, who last featured for the Super Eagles in June 2024 during a World Cup qualifier against Benin in Abidjan, returns to the squad at a time when Nigeria’s attacking options are under close scrutiny.

“It is a good decision to bring back Onuachu. Nigeria has been too dependent on Osimhen, and that is not healthy for any team,” Ijeh said.

The former striker explained that AFCON tournaments are physically demanding and unpredictable, making it important to have multiple attacking options who can change games when needed.

“You cannot depend on one striker throughout the tournament. Injuries, fatigue, or tight games can change everything,” he added.

Ijeh believes Onuachu’s physical presence and aerial strength offer a different dimension to Nigeria’s attack, especially in matches where space is limited.

“Paul gives you something different. He can hold the ball, win headers, and trouble defenders in the box,” he noted.

The former international also highlighted the importance of tactical flexibility, saying Onuachu’s inclusion allows the coach to adjust formations and game plans depending on the opponent.

“Having options gives the coach freedom. Sometimes you need height, sometimes movement. Onuachu gives that alternative,” he said.

Ijeh dismissed concerns about Onuachu’s recent absence from the national team, stressing that experience and familiarity with African football still count.

“He knows African football. That experience matters in AFCON,” he stated.

He urged the coaching crew to manage Osimhen carefully during the tournament, warning against overworking the Napoli forward.

“Osimhen is world-class, but he must be protected. Sharing responsibility will help the team,” Ijeh explained.

Ijeh concluded by expressing optimism that the Super Eagles’ attacking depth could prove decisive in Morocco.

“If Nigeria uses all their attacking options well, they can go far in this tournament,” he said.
