The 28-year-old Nigerian has endured a frustrating season at the Gtech Community Stadium, managing just 88 minutes of league football and a single start in the Premier League.

In search of regular playing time, Onyeka agreed to a short-term move as the January transfer window drew to a close.

Although clubs such as Valencia and Sheffield United were previously linked with the energetic midfielder, Coventry City emerged as the successful suitors.

The Sky Blues, managed by Frank Lampard, persisted in their pursuit and eventually convinced Brentford to sanction the deal.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that the agreement is a loan until the end of the 2025/26 season, with Coventry holding an option to make the move permanent.

Onyeka remains contracted to Brentford until 2027, with his market value currently estimated at €7 million.

Coventry City are leading the Championship standings and are firmly in the hunt for promotion to the Premier League.

Lampard is strengthening his squad with experienced players as the title race intensifies, and Onyeka is expected to provide steel, intensity, and top-flight know-how in midfield.

The Nigeria international could make his debut for Coventry when they take on Oxford United in midweek Championship action.

Should he feature, Onyeka will become the fourth Nigerian to don the Coventry City colours, following Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Dele Adebola, and Bright Enobakhare.

The move offers Onyeka a chance to regain momentum and play a decisive role in Coventry’s push for promotion.
