Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi has revealed how Frank Lampard played a crucial role in reviving his football career during one of its lowest points.
The Fulham star, who was then at Everton, opened up about the turbulent period he faced following his red card at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and how he was on the brink of being loaned out by then-manager Rafa Benitez.

Iwobi, sent off during Nigeria’s Round-of-16 clash against Tunisia, returned to Everton uncertain of his place and future. “There were talks about me going on loan,” Iwobi recalled, speaking candidly about the difficult time. “It was a really low moment for me.”
However, everything changed when Frank Lampard took over as Everton’s manager in early 2022. According to Iwobi, Lampard gave every player a clean slate and reignited his confidence by encouraging him to express himself on the pitch.
“He came in and gave everyone a fresh start,” Iwobi said. “He kept saying, ‘express yourself, play freely’—and that’s what I started doing. I felt trusted again.”
Lampard’s faith paid off. Iwobi began featuring regularly, eventually transitioning into a more central midfield role where his energy and creativity stood out. He played a key role in Everton’s battle against relegation, famously scoring a dramatic last-minute winner against Newcastle United.
The former Arsenal player credited Lampard’s belief in him as the turning point in his career. “He saved my career. Without him, I don’t know where I’d be right now,” Iwobi added.
Now at Fulham, Iwobi continues to show the form that once seemed lost. But he says he’ll never forget how one manager’s support turned everything around when it mattered most.
