Former Minister Wants ‘Busy’ Nigerian Athletes

Former minister of sports, Bolaji Abdullahi has come out with a verdict that the only way Nigeria can return to glory days in international athletics is if the country’s track and field stars get busy on the global terrain.

Abdullahi, who recently expressed an intent to run as governor of Kwara State, stated in an interview with sports247.ng that the only way Nigerian athletes can raise their quality and value is by competing regularly on the international circuit.

He stressed that recent absence of Nigerian athletes in the global limelight accounts for why the country cannot garner more medals at the All Africa Games, Commonwealth Games and Olympics.

Abdullahi said: “If there is a Nigerian track and field athlete that is not competing in a global competition, and is currently rated in one meet or the other in recent time, then that athlete is zero.

“Any serious minded athlete who wants to be successful should be in one global platform or the other, competing to up his or her status.”
