Former Akwa United Striker Edem Akakatang Dies After Collapsing During a Novelty Match in Oron

The football community in Akwa Ibom State has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of former Akwa United striker Edem Akakatang.

Akakatang tragically collapsed while featuring in a novelty football match at the Oron Sports Stadium on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

Eyewitnesses said he received immediate medical attention and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The late forward enjoyed a distinguished playing career, representing clubs such as Ebughu United FC, Ecodrill FC, Akwa Starlets, Akwa United, and Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Renowned for his goalscoring ability, he earned a reputation as one of the most prolific strikers of his generation.

After stepping away from professional football due to the absence of a club contract, Akakatang returned to his hometown of Oron.

Despite no longer playing professionally, he remained actively involved in the game, regularly participating in community football competitions and All-Stars matches.

His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the football fraternity, with tributes expected from former teammates, clubs, and fans who remember his contributions to the sport.
