Flying Eagles Turn Focus to Saudi Arabia After Painful Norway Defeat

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have shifted their attention to Thursday’s must-win clash against Saudi Arabia following their 1-0 loss to Norway in the opening match of the FIFA U20 World Cup.

The two-time finalists dominated large spells against the Europeans but were undone by a controversial penalty in the 9th minute. Despite a barrage of second-half chances — including Tahir Maigana hitting the post and Nasiru Salihu blasting over the bar — Nigeria could not find an equaliser.

Head coach Aliyu Zubairu has already urged his players to bounce back. “We cannot dwell on this defeat. The most important thing now is Saudi Arabia. We have to give everything to win that game if we want to stay in this tournament,” he said.

Captain Daniel Bameyi echoed his coach’s message, attributing the Norway defeat to bad luck but stressing that the team must be more clinical. “We did everything right except score. We cannot allow this to happen again. Against Saudi Arabia, we must take our chances,” he said.

Norway coach Bjorn Johansen had earlier praised Nigeria, calling them a “very tough opponent,” despite his team’s win. That respect will serve as motivation for the Flying Eagles, who are determined to prove themselves.

The Nigerians know that anything short of victory could put their qualification hopes in jeopardy. With a strong squad and history of resilience, optimism remains that they can turn things around.

“We are not out yet,” said midfielder Nasiru Salihu. “We will fight to the end. The Saudi game is like a final for us, and we are ready.”

All eyes will now be on Thursday’s clash, as the Flying Eagles seek redemption and their first points of the tournament.
