When Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets step onto the pitch in Ouagadougou this weekend, they won’t just be playing for a regional trophy—they will be fighting to rescue a crumbling legacy.
Once undisputed global royalty in youth football, Nigeria’s shocking disappearance from recent U17 World Cup tournaments has left fans disillusioned and authorities furious.
As the team departed for Burkina Faso today, the mandate delivered to them was stripped of all diplomacy: end the national embarrassment immediately.
Rather than offering the usual lighthearted encouragement, sports leaders placed the ultimate ultimatum on the young squad.
The message was crisp, intense, and uncompromising conquering the WAFU B tournament isn’t an ambition; it is an absolute requirement.
Facing tough group rivals Côte d’Ivoire and Niger right out of the gate, there is no room for a slow start or tactical excuses.
Calling on the relentless “never-say-die” Nigerian spirit, officials made it clear that failure is simply off the table.
The mission is a non-negotiable three-part test: dominate in Burkina Faso, punch their ticket to the AFCON, and bring Nigeria back to the World Cup stage where it belongs.
The weight of an entire country’s footballing pride now rests on the shoulders of these 25 players selected to execute the mission:
* Goalkeepers: Mutiu Adenle, Abdulfatai Seriki, Richard Oguama
* Defenders: Chinedu Nchoje, Goodness Ukwubile, Victor Ogbonna, Daniel Dickson, Chinonso Umenozie, Jamiu Issa, Daniel Agunzi
* Midfielders: Israel Irabor, Adewolu Lukman, Izuchukwu Ogboji, Sochima Emeka, Michael Ekundayo, Al-Ameen Adegboya, Saeed Hussaini, Abubakar Abdulrasaq
* Forwards: Godswill Usoro, Daniel Lawrence, Chiedozie Igboenyobe, Faruq Azeez, David Fagbamila, Mubarak Fasiu, Abiodun John
The marching orders have been delivered. Now, all eyes turn to Burkina Faso to see if this squad has the nerves to perform under non-stop pressure.
