Florence Olarinoye: Nigeria’s Rising Star Wins Six Gold Medals in One Day at 2025 Africa Junior/Youth Weightlifting Championship

Nigeria’s Florence Olarinoye delivered a record-breaking performance on Monday evening at the ongoing 2025 Africa Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championship in Accra, Ghana, winning an astonishing six gold medals in a single day.

Competing in the women’s 58kg category, the 2023 National Youth Games (NYG) gold medallist swept the board by clinching three gold medals in the Junior class and another three in the Youth events.

Olarinoye, who also won silver at the 2024 National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun State, lifted 71kg in snatch, 86kg in clean and jerk, and recorded a combined total of 157kg to secure the medals across both divisions.

Her remarkable feat has now boosted Nigeria’s overall tally to eight gold and one silver medal at the Championship.

Earlier on Monday, Ezinwa Chinaza Cecilia opened Nigeria’s medal charge with two gold and a silver medal in the 59kg category. She lifted 63kg in snatch, 72kg in clean and jerk, and a total of 135kg to set the tone for the country’s dominance.

The medal presentation ceremony will take place today at the Ga Mashie Hall, Trust Sports Emporium, Accra.

Nigeria’s impressive run comes at a significant moment for the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), which elected a new board over the weekend. Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Aladi was returned as President for another four-year term during the 2025 Elective Congress.

The 2025 Africa Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championship, which began on Friday, August 15, will run until Friday, August 22, in Ghana’s capital, Accra.
