Nigeria’s Flamingos made a statement of intent at the 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls’ Cup after recording a commanding 5-0 victory over Niger in their opening match of the competition.

Captain Chidi Harmony set the tone for the Flamingos in the 16th minute, breaking the deadlock to give Nigeria an early lead.
The goal settled the Nigerian side and allowed them to play with greater confidence as they continued to put pressure on the Nigerien defence.
Nigeria’s persistence paid off again in the 35th minute when Awawu Bashiru doubled the advantage. The Flamingos entered the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead, having largely dictated the tempo of the contest.
After the restart, Niger attempted to limit the damage, but Nigeria remained firmly in control and continued to threaten in the final third.
The Flamingos eventually found their reward late in the second half, with Ohunene Sunday adding Nigeria’s third goal in the 83rd minute.
Barely a minute later, Mary Dunstan got on the scoresheet to make it 4-0, as the Nigerian attack took advantage of the spaces opening up in the Nigerien defence.
With the match already beyond doubt, Nigeria continued to push for another goal, and Ayomide Rotimi completed the rout in the 94th minute to make it 5-0 at the final whistle.
The emphatic result gives Nigeria a perfect start to their WAFU B campaign and provides the team with valuable momentum going into their next fixture.
Attention will now shift to a potentially decisive regional battle against Ghana. The meeting with their West African rivals promises to provide a much tougher test for the Flamingos, who will be looking to build on their impressive attacking performance against Niger.
With five different goalscorers finding the net, Nigeria demonstrated their attacking depth and ability to threaten from different areas of the pitch.
