Finidi George: Rivers United’s Coach Confident Ahead of Return Leg After Gritty Draw in Kinshasa

Rivers United head coach Finidi George has described his side’s goalless draw with Les Aigles in Kinshasa as a valuable performance, despite the logistical challenges and hostile environment his players encountered.

The Garden City club had travelled across borders, battling fatigue and unfamiliar conditions, but left the Democratic Republic of Congo with their clean sheet intact.

After the match, George was full of praise for his defence, noting their discipline and refusal to concede, but admitted his side missed opportunities going forward. “We were patient, perhaps too patient at times,” he said. “We could have pressed more in pockets, taken earlier risks.”

Looking ahead to the return leg, George stressed the importance of strategizing carefully. “Home advantage will help,” he observed, “but we cannot rely on it alone. Our players must be mentally fresh and tactically sharp. We need to convert chances.”

He confirmed his team would focus in training on attacking transitions, dealing with counter-attacks, and set-piece routines—both offensively and defensively. “Small details will decide this tie,” he added.

George also spoke about managing the squad’s physical recovery after the long trip. He believes that ensuring rest and mental focus will be as crucial as tactical adjustments.

Summing up his mood, the coach declared: “We came here to win. A draw is acceptable, but not enough. When we return to Port Harcourt, we will give everything to secure the result we need.”
