Rivers United concluded their group-stage campaign with a 3–0 loss to RS Berkane on Saturday night, February 14, 2026, at the Stade Municipal de Berkane.

The defeat condemned the Nigerian champions to the bottom of Group A, finishing with just one point from six matches—one of the poorest records by a Nigerian side in the history of the competition.

Speaking after the match, Finidi acknowledged the superiority of the Moroccan outfit, particularly in the first half.

“I think they were the better side today. In the first half, they dominated ball possession, created all the chances and got their two goals.

In the second half, we tried to match that energy, but it was not possible. Today, the better side won, and we have to congratulate Berkane for their performance,” Finidi said.

RS Berkane took control of the encounter with two quick goals before halftime, as Youssef Mehri opened the scoring in the 38th minute before Paul Bassène doubled the lead five minutes later.

Bassène completed his brace shortly after the restart to seal a comprehensive victory and confirm Berkane’s qualification for the quarter-finals.

Despite the disappointing outcome, Finidi described the experience as a valuable learning curve for his squad, many of whom were competing in the CAF Champions League for the first time.

“It’s an important tournament. We tried to do better, but it was not possible. This is a learning process for the players because none of them had experienced the Champions League before. If we come back next season, we’re going to be stronger, better prepared—mentally and physically,” he added.

Rivers United ended Group A without a win, while Pyramids FC topped the group with an unbeaten run to qualify alongside RS Berkane.

For the Port Harcourt-based club, attention will now shift back to domestic duties as they look to regroup and rebuild ahead of future continental challenges.
