Finidi George Makes History: First Nigerian Coach In Seven Years To Guide a Local Team To CAF Champions League Group Stage

Rivers United manager Finidi George has written his name into Nigerian football history, becoming the first Nigerian coach in seven years to lead a domestic side to the CAF Champions League group stage.

The milestone came after Rivers United defeated Black Bulls of Mozambique 3–1 in a thrilling second-leg clash, sealing their place among Africa’s elite clubs.

The victory marks Nigeria’s long-awaited return to the group phase, the first since 2018, when Enyimba International achieved the feat.

Finidi, who took charge of Rivers United earlier this year, has revitalized the team with his tactical intelligence, discipline, and strong motivational leadership — qualities that have earned him widespread praise from fans and football stakeholders.

The former Ajax Amsterdam and Super Eagles winger, known for his calm demeanor and strategic mindset, expressed immense pride in his players’ performance.

“This victory is for Nigerian football,” Finidi said after the match. “The players gave everything. It’s been a long time since a Nigerian team reached this level, and we’re proud to bring that joy back to our fans.”

Rivers United’s qualification is being celebrated nationwide as a significant boost for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), which has long sought continental consistency.

Finidi’s success not only highlights his growing reputation as one of Africa’s brightest young coaches but also reignites belief in Nigerian technical expertise at the top level of club football.

For Rivers United, the journey continues — and for Finidi George, it’s a historic milestone that redefines the legacy of Nigerian coaching excellence
