Finidi Fumes After 3–0 Drubbing: ‘We Had Chances — Then Gifted the Champions the Game!’

Rivers United head coach Finidi George has delivered a brutally honest assessment of his team’s performance following their 3–0 defeat to defending champions Pyramids FC in their CAF Champions League opener.

The former Super Eagles winger admitted his side were punished for wastefulness and costly lapses in concentration — especially against a team as ruthless as the North African giants.

Pyramids’ star man Ahmed Atef stole the show with a stunning hat-trick, but Finidi insists the scoreline doesn’t tell the full story of the game. According to him, Rivers United created “good chances” in the first half — opportunities that could have changed the complexion of the encounter — but failed to take advantage.

“We had a few moments in the first half that we didn’t take. In games like this, if you don’t score when you have the chance, you get punished,” Finidi said.

The second half, however, unravelled quickly. Finidi lamented the “avoidable mistake” his players made, which gifted the Egyptian champions the opening goal and completely shifted momentum. From that moment, the Nigerians chased the game — and Pyramids, smelling blood, pounced clinically.

Finidi acknowledged that his team must show more maturity and composure at this elite level, emphasising that the Champions League demands precision and discipline, not just effort. “One mistake at this level can cost you everything — and it did today,” he added.

Despite the heavy loss, Finidi remained optimistic, insisting that the defeat must serve as both a lesson and a wake-up call for his squad. He emphasized that with group-stage games still ahead, Rivers United cannot afford to dwell on the result or lose confidence.

“We still have matches to play. We must correct our errors, stay compact, and be more decisive in front of goal,” he said.

The coach urged his players to respond with resilience and determination, insisting that Nigerian clubs must develop the mentality to compete with the continent’s best.

For Finidi, the message is simple:
Learn fast, fight harder — the Champions League waits for no one.
