FIFA World Cup: Ex-Super Eagles Star Backs African Champions Despite Painful Knockout Exits

Former Nigeria international Abiodun Obafemi has praised the overall performance of Africa’s representatives at the ongoing FIFA World Cup despite the heartbreaking elimination of DR Congo and Senegal in the knockout stage.

The former Super Eagles midfielder described both exits as unfortunate, noting that the two African nations had taken the lead in their respective Round of 32 matches before eventually losing to England and Belgium.

Obafemi believes the performances of African teams throughout the tournament have once again demonstrated the continent’s growing strength on the global stage.

«”DR Congo and Senegal were unlucky because they were leading their matches. They showed character and quality, but football can be cruel sometimes,” Obafemi said.»

While expressing disappointment over the exits, the former midfielder reserved special praise for Morocco and the remaining African teams still in the competition, insisting they have what it takes to continue flying the continent’s flag.

He noted that Africa’s impressive showing at the tournament should encourage greater investment in youth development, coaching and football infrastructure across the continent.

«”I’m still hopeful that an African country can win the World Cup one day. The quality is there, and we’re getting closer with every tournament,” he added.»

Obafemi also described the performances of African nations as another sign of the continent’s steady football development, with more players now competing regularly at the highest level in Europe.

He expressed confidence that Africa’s encouraging World Cup campaign would inspire the next generation of footballers and strengthen the belief that the continent can eventually produce a FIFA World Cup champion.
