FIFA U20 World Cup: Japan Sink Egypt As Africa’s Hunt For New History Begins In Chile

The 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup burst into life in Santiago on Saturday evening, with Japan laying down an early marker after a convincing 2-0 win over Egypt at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos.

In front of a lively Chilean crowd, the Young Samurai Blue wasted little time asserting themselves. Riku Ichihara broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, sending the Egyptian goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Just three minutes into the second half, Hiroto Ishii doubled the advantage with a sharp finish following a perfectly weighted pass from Shun Saito, sealing the contest.

Egypt, appearing at this level for the first time in over a decade, struggled to find composure against Japan’s relentless pressing.

The Young Pharaohs enjoyed nearly half of possession but fashioned only one effort on target from six attempts.

In contrast, Japan peppered their goal with 16 shots, won eight corners, and recorded 27 touches inside the penalty area, a measure of their dominance.

For Africa, the result was an early setback. Yet, the continent’s hopes remain high as three other representatives — Nigeria, Morocco, and South Africa — prepare to begin their campaigns in Chile.

Africa’s Long Wait

It has been 16 years since Ghana became the first African nation to lift the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2009.

Since then, no side from the continent has managed to replicate that historic triumph.

Nigeria, Africa’s most experienced campaigners at this level, have twice reached the final but still chase a maiden crown.

Morocco, riding the wave of their senior team’s global success, arrive in Chile with tactical discipline and belief.

South Africa, less decorated but youthful and energetic, will look to punch above their weight.

Egypt, meanwhile, face a daunting path to recovery after their opening defeat, but remain a team with the talent to respond.

Elsewhere on Saturday, hosts Chile delighted their supporters with a dramatic 2-1 win over New Zealand, while Ukraine edged South Korea 2-1 in Group B.

Paraguay and Panama served up a five-goal thriller, with the South Americans prevailing 3-2.

Today’s Fixtures

The tournament continues on Sunday with two enticing clashes.

Morocco open their campaign against European powerhouse Spain in Group C, while Italy take on Australia in Group D.

For Africa, the journey has only just begun. The dream of lifting the trophy once more is alive, but the road promises to be anything but smooth.
