FIFA Finally Clears Arthur Okonkwo for Nigeria

FIFA has officially approved the international switch of Arthur Okonkwo, making the Wrexham AFC goalkeeper eligible to represent the Nigeria national football team at senior level.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper, born in Camden to Nigerian parents, had previously represented England national youth football teams at various levels, including the Under-18s during his time at Arsenal FC.

However, he had not been capped at senior level, leaving the door open for a switch in allegiance.

Okonkwo joined Wrexham on loan in 2023, impressing during his spell at the Racecourse Ground before sealing a permanent move in the summer of 2024.

Since then, he has established himself as a key figure for the club, delivering consistent performances and recording multiple clean sheets in their league campaign.

FIFA’s approval, confirmed in early April 2026, marks a significant milestone in Okonkwo’s international career.

The clearance now places him firmly in contention for selection by the Super Eagles ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

His availability is expected to bolster Nigeria’s goalkeeping department, where he will compete with established options such as Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye, and Francis Uzoho.

With the green light secured, attention now shifts to whether Okonkwo will earn a maiden call-up and potentially make his debut in Nigerian colours as the Super Eagles continue to build towards future competitions.
