In a dramatic turn of events, South Africa coach Hugo Broos is banking on Super Eagles to beat Benin Republic on Tuesday in order for South Africa to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bafana Bafana, once favourites to secure their spot, must now rely on a Nigerian victory over Benin Republic on Tuesday in Uyo — while they defeat Rwanda in their final Group C fixture.

South Africa’s campaign has taken a sudden twist following a three-point deduction and three-goal penalty for fielding an ineligible player.
The team ensured a frustrating goalless draw against Zimbabwe, on Friday which have cost them dearly.
Heading into the final round, Benin Republic lead the group with 17 points, South Africa sit second with 15, and Nigeria trail closely behind on 14.
Speaking after the draw in Johannesburg, head coach Hugo Broos admitted that the qualification race has become complicated — but remains hopeful.
“We have to play just like today and try to win the game,” Broos said. “Then see what happens. Maybe Benin lose in Nigeria, or maybe it comes down to goal difference. I don’t have a clear view yet, but we just have to go for the victory against Rwanda and hope the rest works in our favour.”
The Belgian tactician acknowledged his team’s struggles against Zimbabwe but urged his players to remain focused on the task ahead.
“It’s disappointing, yes,” Broos continued, “but we still have a chance. We must win our match — that’s all we can control.”
For South Africa to reach the World Cup for the first time since hosting the 2010 edition, they must beat Rwanda convincingly and pray Nigeria overcome Benin Republic in Uyo.
Anything short of that could see Bafana Bafana miss out on a ticket to North America — as Group C heads toward what promises to be a tense and thrilling finale.
