Nigeria’s preparation for the upcoming FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers has suffered another setback as defender Felix Agu has been ruled out due to injury.
The Werder Bremen full-back picked up a syndesmosis ligament injury during his club’s 1–0 Bundesliga victory over St. Pauli last weekend. Agu was substituted shortly before halftime.

The German club confirmed on Monday through an official statement that the 24-year-old will be sidelined for several months.
Agu’s absence adds to the growing injury list in Eric Sekou Chelle’s squad, with Cyril Dessers and Bright Osayi-Samuel already ruled out.
The coach had earlier replaced the duo with Christantus Uche and Zaidu Sanusi ahead of the crucial qualifiers.
The Super Eagles will face Lesotho on Friday in South Africa before returning home to host Benin Republic next Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
Both fixtures are must-win encounters as Nigeria continue their push for a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
With Agu’s withdrawal, Coach Chelle is expected to name a replacement in the coming days as he seeks to manage a growing injury crisis within the team.
The tactician faces a race against time to reshuffle his squad and maintain balance as the qualifiers enter a decisive phase.
