D’Tigers enter the final game of Window 1 under immense pressure, having lost their opening two fixtures.

Nigeria fell 78–88 to Tunisia in a tense overtime battle before suffering a shock 69–55 defeat to Guinea — their first-ever loss to the Guineans in World Cup qualifying history.

Rwanda find themselves in a similar situation, also losing to both Tunisia and Guinea.

With the group standings tight, today’s encounter will determine which nation joins Tunisia and Guinea in progressing to the next window of qualifiers.

Nigeria head coach Abdulrahman Mohamed expressed disappointment at the team’s early struggles, admitting they “never expected to reach the last game without a single win.”

He emphasized, however, that the squad has yet to play to its full potential and remains capable of turning things around.

Rwanda, equally desperate, see Nigeria as the final obstacle to keep their 2027 World Cup dream alive — making this clash a fiercely contested showdown.

How the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers Works

Sixteen African nations are competing for the continent’s five tickets to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Doha, Qatar.

The participating teams are:
Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Sudan, Tunisia, and Uganda.

Format

The qualifiers span five windows between 2025 and 2027.

The 16 teams are split into four groups of four for the First Round.

Each team plays six games across the first three windows:

Window 1: November 2025

Window 2: February 2026

Window 3: July 2026

The top three teams from each group advance to the Second Round.

Second Round Structure

Advancing teams merge into two larger groups:

Groups A and C combine to form Group E

Groups B and D combine to form Group F

All First Round results carry over, making every game count.

Teams play six additional games across two more windows:

Window 4: August 2026

Window 5: February 2027

At the end of the Second Round, the top two teams from each group plus the best third-placed team qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027.

This qualification pathway mirrors the successful systems used for the 2019 and 2023 World Cups.

With everything on the line, D’Tigers know only a win will keep their hopes alive as Africa’s long road to the 2027 World Cup continues.
