FIBA U19WWC: ‘Incredible’ Nora Ezike Reveals Winning Formula Behind D’Tigress’ Historic Triumph

The star of the show was 18-year-old Nora Ezike, who delivered an incredible flawless debut performance as Nigeria’s U19 Women’s National Basketball Team, D’Tigress made history on Saturday secured their first-ever victory at the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup with a thrilling 93–88 win over China.

The emotional triumph at the Sportovni Hala Vodova arena in Brno marked a landmark moment, not just for Nigerian basketball, but for the African continent, as the team defied all pre-tournament expectations to register a statement win on the global stage.

Nora Ezike shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and racked up 25 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, playing with the poise and presence of a seasoned professional.

Speaking after the game, Ezike revealed the team’s mindset and discipline played a pivotal role in their success:

“The key to the game was sticking to what we had practiced and what we said we were going to do heading into the game — as well as never giving up,” she said.

“We played good defense and kept supporting each other. At the end of the game, when you’re up, you have to slow down, and we didn’t rush — we kept our composure.”

Nigeria’s tactical discipline and fighting spirit were on full display in what turned out to be a roller-coaster contest.

They remained composed in crunch time, withstanding a late surge from the Chinese side to seal a historic result.

Ezike also spoke about drawing inspiration from D’Tigress, Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, who made waves at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by reaching the quarter-finals — the first African team to do so in Olympic women’s basketball history.

“I took inspiration because I went to Paris 2024 with my family and I watched Nigeria’s games,” she said. “It was really great to see how far they went.”

With the win, Nigeria not only silenced their doubters but also laid a foundation for future success at the tournament.

The team now aims to build on this momentum and take further strides forward as they continue their campaign in Brno.

As celebrations echoed across Nigeria and the wider African basketball community, one thing became clear — the future is bright, and the next generation is ready to carry the torch.
