‘Favour Ofili Is Still Our Athlete’ — NSC Fires Warning After Coach’s Nigeria Comments

Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has declared that Nigerian sprint star Favour Ofili remains eligible to represent the country despite missing the ongoing national athletics trials.

Speaking during the Athletics Federation of Nigeria trials, Olopade dismissed speculation surrounding Ofili’s status, insisting her absence does not affect her place in Nigeria’s plans for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

“Favour Ofili remains a Nigerian athlete,” Olopade said.

The NSC boss explained that the sprinter was invited to the trials but, like several Nigerian athletes based in the United States, was unable to attend.

He stressed that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria would still extend an invitation to Ofili when preparations begin for the Commonwealth Games.

“Her absence from the trials does not change her status, and she remains in contention for selection,” he added.

Olopade also issued a stern warning to Dennis Shaver, the Louisiana State University coach, over what he described as repeated attacks on Nigeria’s sovereignty and athletics administration.

According to the NSC Director General, Shaver should refrain from making what he termed “unguarded statements” about Nigerian athletics.

“He should be careful with comments concerning Nigeria’s sovereignty and athletics administration,” Olopade stated.

Olopade further warned that such remarks could attract sanctions from World Athletics if the Athletics Federation of Nigeria decides to lodge a formal complaint.

The NSC maintains that Nigerian athletes competing abroad remain an important part of the country’s future plans as preparations continue for major international competitions, including the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
