Backed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and organised by Dunamis-Icon Limited, the Games are bringing together over 4,000 young athletes from across the Niger Delta to compete in 17 sports ranging from football and athletics to boxing, wrestling and other Olympic disciplines. Beyond medals.
The mission is clear: to discover raw talent, build future champions and use sport as a tool for unity, youth empowerment and sustainable development in the oil-rich region.
On the opening day, women’s football delivered the first major statement — and it came from the hosts.
Team Edo announced their intentions in emphatic fashion, demolishing Team Akwa Ibom 6–0, with Favour Enodumwenben emerging as the face of the tournament’s opening chapter.
The forward struck twice inside the opening 17 minutes to set the tone, combining pace and precision to leave the Akwa Ibom defence reeling.
Edo tightened their grip just before the break when Aisosa Okodia calmly dispatched a penalty in the 44th minute. Any hopes of a second-half response were quickly extinguished as Agatha Imoisili added the fourth moments after the restart.
Enodumwenben then completed a superb hat-trick in the 53rd minute, capping a dazzling individual display, before Victoria Apaneshia put the gloss on a dominant performance with a late strike.
While the women’s game produced fireworks, the men’s football encounter between Team Delta and Team Akwa Ibom told a different story.
Played at a high tempo and with plenty of physical battles, the contest ended 1–1, with both sides cancelling each other out in an evenly matched and entertaining opener.
As the Games roll on through February 27, the opening day has already captured the spirit of the Niger Delta Games — raw talent on display, fierce competition, and a shared vision of building champions and opportunities beyond oil.
