F’ormer Nigeria international Monday Odiaka has stressed that the Super Eagles’ success at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco will largely depend on the level of support they receive from fans, both at home and abroad.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Odiaka said strong backing from Nigerians could play a decisive role in how far the team progresses.
“Support matters a lot. When players feel the nation is behind them, it gives them extra strength,” Odiaka said.
The former defender explained that tournament football is as much mental as it is physical, noting that encouragement from supporters can boost confidence during difficult moments.
“AFCON games are tough. When things are not going well, the players need that push from the fans,” he added.
Odiaka believes that the atmosphere created by Nigerian supporters in Morocco could influence the team’s performances, especially in tight matches.
“Crowd support can lift a team. It can intimidate opponents and motivate your own players,” he noted.
While acknowledging the scepticism surrounding Nigeria’s chances, Odiaka urged fans not to allow doubt to turn into negativity.
“Criticism is normal, but constant negativity does not help. The team needs encouragement,” he said.
The former international stressed that a clearer assessment of Nigeria’s true potential can only be made once the team advances beyond the group stage.
“We’ll know more about how far the team can go when they reach the second round,” Odiaka explained.
He added that early progress could change perceptions and restore belief among supporters.
“Once Nigeria start winning games, confidence will grow — both within the team and among the fans,” he said.
Odiaka also called on fans in the diaspora to show visible support at match venues in Morocco.
“Nigerians abroad should come out in numbers. The players notice these things,” he urged.
He concluded by stating that unity between the team and supporters could be the difference between success and disappointment.
“If the fans stand with the team, it can push them beyond their limits,” Odiaka said.
As the Super Eagles prepare for AFCON, Odiaka’s message is clear, total support from Nigerians could be a powerful weapon in Morocco.
